Theo climbs up the oak tree one branch at a time, ignoring
the gloomy darkness around him. The thick, sturdy branches
support his weight as he shifts back and forth between them,
ferociously climbing further up. The branches are barely
visible by the lamppost. He doesn't care. He moves swiftly,
twisting and turning up the tree, eager to reach the sense of
freedom near the top.
A loud "Theo" startles him. He misplaces his foot, sliding
down the tree. Theo flails around, trying to grasp the
branches slowly passing him until his spine meets a solid
piece and abruptly snaps him like a twig. He fades away
without feeling any pain.
Theo's mother screams. She hysterically cries out for
help. Anna's husband runs out of their house and sprints
toward her at the end of the trailer park. She points at their
broken son high up in the tree. Their teenager’s mangled
body dangles loosely around a tree branch.
Anna frantically searches her pockets for her phone. Her
tears fall fast down her face; she chokes on her words. Anna's
fear consumes her thoughts and her voice. Her heart shatters.
Her husband, Joshua, grabs her cell from her shaking hands
and dials 911. His voice breaks, but he manages to speak the
address.
The air around them shifts. The wind fiercely blows dead
shavings of grass toward the tree. Anna's cousin, Josephine,
appears next to them. Her skin is whiter than usual. Her long,
silky hair does not flow. Her thin hourglass frame is covered
by a knee-length white dress, untouched by the strong whips
of wind. Josephine does not look at them as she glides closer
to the tree. She lifts her hand to her face out of their sight.
Suddenly, Theo's body appears at their feet in front of
Anna and Joshua. His body is intact. Anna falls to her knees,
vaguely hearing sirens in the distance. A surge of energy
disappears, departing with her cousin."Wha. w.. what," her husband whispers. He kneels beside
her and their son, still in shock. His brain stalls as the
ambulance arrives on the scene.
